A Study on the Introduction of a Psychology Curriculum into Undergraduate Education(2)The Effects of Learning Experience on the Changing Images of Psychology
This study aimed to reveal the structure of images that undergraduate students have for psychology, and to investigate how the images change through the learning experience or lectures. An exploratory factor analysis was carried out using data from 177 university students (102 novice students of psychology and 75 experienced students), and three factors were extracted: “Usefulness” (11 items), “Positive science” (6 items), and “Pseudo science” (4 items). Further analysis showed that the usefulness of psychology was estimated much higher in novice students, and the positivism of psychology was better recognized in experienced students. These results suggest that the learning experience certainly promotes understanding of the scientific features of psychology, but the novice students may be disappointed with the content of the lectures. It is necessary for faculty members to clearly convey the significance of learning psychology to the students without weakening their motivation.
